So this is where I'm going with this.
So that early promise was pretty much left in the dust at this point.
We were hoping that the LHC would see some evidence of new particles, these so-called superpartners or supersymmetry.
The LHC so far has found the Higgs boson and nothing else.
And this, by the way, it's not like most physicists thought the LHC would find supersymmetry.
A lot of people, probably most people would say, yeah, we'll be lucky if we see anything else.
Optimists were hopeful we would see something or at least some evidence of supersymmetry.
We have seen nothing.

think string theory unfortunately generated because the hype was so extreme the backlash was extreme as well and there were a lot of like oh you know string theory crap kind of stuff I you know as a working string theorist colleagues who were string theorists I
You know, you can argue, as scientists do, people argued about whether certain papers or results were correct all the time.
Everyone I worked with was extremely careful and working very hard to do good science.
I think there was a backlash, not just outside of science in the general culture, but also in science
lot of, oh yeah,
a lot of scientists who didn't think string theory was deserving of the hype.
And of course, the direct reason for this is a lot of funding was being moved to fund string theory positions and stuff like this that might have otherwise gone to departments.
So I think it's very easy to feel resentful of the new hotness that's getting all the money when your thing isn't.
That's not to say they didn't have legitimate objections, but you know funding is scarce in academia and a lot of hiring is very fad driven and when the fads not your thing It's easy to be mad about it.
