Claude Fable V found a simple, and you can look at it's three lines, they're just simple polynomials, not that high degree, very, very simple, and three variables.
disproving this conjecture that has been open for over ninety years.
I think it's kinda awesome.
Unfortunately.
Yeah, look, I I have very strong ethical uh objections to AI and and things like that.
But it's amazing.
This is the kind of thing that computers are good at, which are grinding through.
And if you look at this example, there's nothing really that notable about it.
It's not like it was some simple thing.
If it was a very sip very simple thing right in front of your face, people would have found it already.
It's complicated enough that you wouldn't just happen
upon it, but if you were doing some kind of scan of possible functions, which is what presumably uh Claude Fable was doing, uh, you would find it.
And so it's exactly the kind of thing that that AI is potentially good for because it can go through, do a lot of examples and say, oh by the way, I found uh I found this.
And so this is also coming on the heels of a few months or a month before that.
There was
There's another conjecture called the Erdish uh unit distance conjecture that OpenAI uh showed was falsely found a counterexample for that as well.
I'm not going to get into the details of that, but it's amazing that mathematicians are now working with AI to find
Pretty you know, examples that are right there you can write down you can write 'em down, you can just check 'em.
Um and these huge problems, open problems in math are just falling to uh to artificial intelligence.
Because the other thing people are now using some of these LLMs for is so these are counterexamples, right?
