The surprising thing for me was the next day she called me to her desk again.
And this time she said,
You did not tell me that you had a white pair too.
And I had forgotten to tell her about the white pair I was wearing that day.
And I apologized.
I didn't know what else to do.
She dismissed me with a flip of her hand.
But at that point, I thought, oh boy, I'm in trouble.
And I need to tell my mom because I've clearly done something wrong.
And I told my mother that evening.
And I can't even begin to describe the look on her face.
I still remember it.
She was furious.
I thought she was angry at me.
But she said, that is none of her damn business.
Who does she think she is?
She was so angry.
And she told me, get in the car now.
I, of course, thought we were going back to the school to confront my teacher, Miss Miller, and I was really frightened.
I did not want to do that.
