Well, it is a surprise considering the conversations our own group have had with the Taoiseach and indeed the Tánaiste and multi cross-party people as well.
So the idea that it is off the table is really quite unacceptable at this point, considering the whole emphasis on
why this needs to change is to do with fundamental principles.
And those principles are to do with fairness.
Yes.
Basically, the law is based on the status and the relationship between the person who dies and their beneficiary.
And that's like a sliding scale where one category is favoured above another category.
And the changes in those categories are radical in that parents and children are at the top of the sliding scale and then unrelated people are at the bottom and considering there are three scales.
Any beneficiary who receives a legacy from an unrelated person has a tax bill over 20,000, whereas a child can receive a benefit for 400,000 without any tax being owed.
Now the difference for us too is that being single and not having children is a fundamental right to all of us.
It's a prerogative that we have.
So we don't need to be disadvantaged by making that choice, whether it is a choice or not, it's irrelevant.
But to be disadvantaged and made
pay a penalty, if you like.
And it really is pointing to the state of affairs where every marriage could be considered a marriage of convenience because you end up in a more favourable position when it comes to your
beneficiaries.
Well, the numbers are one thing, and we can access census figures and numbers of people who are without children and numbers of inheritances, etc.
However, this matter of inheritance tax that we're referring to, it affects the whole population.
We're not talking about a minority group within the population.
And even if we are talking about a minority group, it is unfair.
