More than 2,700 flights into and out of the three New York City-area airports were canceled Sunday, and New Jersey Transit suspended all rail and bus service.

Operations may resume on Monday, but no official word on when.

With a powerful winter storm lurching closer, the governors of New York and New Jersey each declared a state of emergency.

The declaration allows the governors to deploy the people and assets needed to combat the snow and ice.

New York has more than 5,000 utility workers on hand ready to repair downed power lines.

The storm could dump as much as 18 inches of snow across the region Sunday and Monday.

The New York metro area got about two inches of snow Saturday, which created travel headaches at airports.

Another storm Sunday could coat the region in up to five inches of snow.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for areas around the Great Lakes, Ontario, and Erie.

Up to four feet of snow could blanket parts through Wednesday.

Strong winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour could create whiteout conditions.

Farther west, the Buffalo area is also bracing for heavy lake-effect snow.

Some isolated spots could get up to two feet.

Snow and strong winds are also spreading from the northern plains to the upper Midwest as an Arctic cold front hits the central and eastern U.S.

over the next couple of days.
