You had on a m all the games were on a Sad Day, so you had what was called a phone girl and uh they were back in in the office and you you dictated it uh to them and I had the same one for uh uh for many, many uh years.
And uh she ended up marrying Greg Hobbs, one of the great
uh sports writers of of of our day too.
And Wendy was uh and and she would she would take it down, you would dictate it and uh and everyone was doing the same thing.
So it was a there was a lot of chatter going on in the box in those days, but later on when when we uh um reverted to to computers it was it it then went to silence.
So
wait for the modem to work to make sure you go through.
There would be the odd uh uh word uh swear word would w when someone had a
yes.
Well yes.
They were in the in the early days it was you basically went into the the rooms, the the uh winning rooms first and then the losers and uh you just went over into a into a corner and the coach would come over.
Uh in those days it was all notebooks, uh the occasional tape recorder, um the odd radio uh person with a um uh a ra and basically the questions would fly and
And because there was no cameras, uh there could some lively exchanges.
And uh I actually outlined one at uh um my l uh gr late great mate Trevor Grant, who worked for The Age, was was one of the first ones he he would throw in the first difficult question, and and Carl Dittrich was Captain Coach of Melbourne, and Carl didn't like the question.
He was dressed in a draped in a towel around his his waist, that's all
Carl had on, and he yelled at Trevor and sh sh went forward and Trevor shot out the door.
Down the corridor, we all stood there, we waited, we didn't we didn't nothing happen.
Next minute Carl came back, uh, resumed the uh the press conference and no one asked about Trevor's welfare.
And fortunately we found out later on that Trevor had escaped through a side door and uh and had got away and he was there ready to ask the first question.
