I've got about sixteen hours of voice mails on on my phones, of of sitting down in front of uh the Sam Newman talking about Polly Farmer, sitting uh uh you know, sitting down with uh Don Scott talking about uh John Kennedy and uh as I said, just catching up with uh uh guys like that was uh um very enlightening in
is probably the word to describe.
Just it was a uh something that uh you just couldn't imagine an AFL club allowing one of the young star recruits to to do something like that.
Well, I mean, let's face it, we don't hitchhike these days anyway, it's too dangerous.
But but but even in those days to uh to to do something like that.
And he did it fairly frequently, he tells me, and uh just uh an as I said, another time in football.
Look, there was it was a real community.
I mean, uh even though everyone was working against each other, there was a sense of uh a bonding because we're all in it together uh and uh w when I got to the stage where I thought, how am I going to finish this this thing I I have done uh a chapter called The Final Siren which is basically explains how the written media cover cover football.
And it's it was a there's a r a a real camaraderie there that uh as it said, when everyone is in the same boat, the siren goes and all of a sudden there's it's quiet in the box and everyone's got their heads poised o these days over the laptops and someone w will throw up a line what's what's so and so's age and next minute you'll there will be a call down the line and thanks and everyone just keeps going.
And uh and if it's a close finish to the game it's there's as much tension in the box as there is in the coaches box, I'm sure, because because we you've only got a certain amount of time to get the uh the story into to the uh office before they uh they go to press and they would be waiting on that football report, say on a Friday night or a Saturday night.

That's right.
And it did happen there that uh Sydney was putting pressure on him 'cause Sydney had gone a little bit earlier.
They wanted the AFL copy.
He said, I need it now and I said um I said to him, There's uh three minutes to go and Hawthorne's three points in front.
Do you want me to guess?
So I was a b I was being a bit of a smart aleck, but but he came to his senses and said, Just get it to me as soon as you can.
