And I was looking at that and I thought, if I was one of those blokes, I'd have to know who's done this to me.

And then I went, not a bad idea for a series, Brian.

So I started to write that bloke's story.

And Jenny Byrne, who's a friend of mine, who's a journalist, she knew I was doing that.

Something had come up and she said, can I read it?

So I gave it to her to read.

And she said, it's good.

I really like how you write.

Have you got any others?

And I went...

No, I don't really, no.

She said, I think if you have stuff like that, we could get it published.

And of course, as soon as someone tells you that, you know, it's, no, I haven't got any stories, but I'm driving down the car and the little bee's buzzing in there.

And I was driving down one day and I went, what if Sam Neill was a thief?

Well, he'd be useless, I'll tell you that.

But I had the thing, Sam the Thief.

Who is Sam and what has he stolen?

And off I ran.

Well, the long and short of it was I ended up with seven short stories and Alan and Unwin read them and said they'd like to publish them and that was off it ran.
