For the 10 years or so after the game that I lived in New Zealand, I almost felt as though I wasn't permitted to enjoy watching rugby.

Our mother wouldn't let us play rugby.

You know, obviously, neither of us were going to be good rugby players at the time.

But I felt as though I didn't have permission to enjoy watching rugby because I'd protested.

When I moved to Australia, I started barracking for the All Blacks.

as part of keeping my New Zealand identity, living in a foreign country.

I wouldn't bother going to any rugby games.

We were living in Melbourne, so they didn't really happen there much.

But I would sort of watch them on TV with my father-in-law and stuff like that.

I think it was part of a period of change.

So the Rainbow Warrior bombing was not long after that.

Yeah, New Zealand was becoming a bit more progressive.

It was sort of growing out of this quite conservative time that it had.

It was also a bit divided.

So there was clearly lots of people who thought rugby was more important than anything else.

But then there was people who were prepared to put quite a lot on the line to protest what they saw as injustice all around the world.

And so New Zealand became a little bit more polarised.

I think it ended up becoming a bit more diverse and the polarisation was probably a part of that.

I moved away from New Zealand only less than 10 years later.

So you could see signs of it happening, but I didn't manage to follow it quite as closely after that.
