I mean, you know, there was a good chance they were going to get grievously injured before the age of 20, you know, and they could have had, it was lots of risk in what they were doing, but in terms of how they approached life, there was so much zest and appetite to it.
It was kind of, they were kind of great.
Well, it's like a lot of stories.
I kind of zeroed in on it gradually.
My first thought was,
we've had these waves of infestations over the last 30 years, you know, Lyme disease and super lice and bedbugs.
And then there was this huge scabies outbreak in Europe that might be coming to this country and screw worms.
And, you know, it's just been like one after the other.
And I thought, there's gotta be a pattern here.
What's going on?
And so I started calling
First I called pest control people in New Jersey, and then they sent me to a bunch of extension folks in Nebraska and Kentucky.
Okay.
And they said, well, yeah, you know, a bunch of those things, we're worried about the screw worm, but they haven't really come across the Texas border yet.
But everybody here is freaked out about alpha-gal.
And I had heard about alpha-gal before.
maybe 12, 15 years ago, but as a kind of a novelty disease.
There was a piece on Radiolab about a woman who'd gotten it.
And it felt very much like what Lyme disease was in the early days.
Like maybe something that in a small pockets like the Hamptons or Martha's Vineyard, which by the way, are two of the biggest hotspots for it.
