And then at some point, once I learned that sensitivity, I could depart from the score and pursue like a more like

delicate sense of what things were doing well in my body that came apart from those simple mechanisms.

What's interesting is that these things can help tune us in, but the worries in the long term, they, okay.

When I was researching this stuff, the most brutal example I found, which is not in the book because my editor thought it was too gross, is pickup artist culture.

So pickup artists, for those of you who don't know, are people who compete for sexual success.

And it's literally called scoring, right?

Okay.

Yeah.

And there are a bunch of sociologists and anthropologists who have studied them.

And I read a bunch of these studies.

And what I found blew my mind because it turns out –

So pickup artists tend to compete for things.

I think you know what they compete for.

Yeah.

Phone numbers, number of sexual acts in an evening, speed from meeting someone to a sexual act with them, right?

Average number of new hookups per night out in a month, stuff like that.

Here's what they don't compete for.

This should be obvious, but I think we forget it.

They don't compete for quality of relationships.

They don't even compete for pleasure.
