And I think we already get a story from Porter.
What they're good at picking up is things that are invariant between people that everyone can detect, that don't take particular sensitivity or context to detect.
This is why we aim at lifespan over happiness.
And I want to notice something really important here.
People talk like happiness or joy is intangible or impossible to track or like some evanescent magic.
It's really obvious.
You know when you're happy and you know when you're depressed.
It's like one of the most obvious things in the world.
It is radiantly at the forefront.
And it actually, I think, takes a long process of socialization for us to be willing to ignore that stuff in favor of the measurable.
So what makes the measurable the measurable is not how loud it is, right?
Happiness is really loud.
Despair is really loud.
It's also not, I mean, people, one of the funny things is when I give the cheese example, for a long time, I'd talk about like length of life versus joy and food.
And people would be like, well, you can't just, you know, you can't really weight those intangibles.
And I would accept that language.
And then I thought, wait, cheese is intangible?
What is more tangible than eating a goddamn mouthful of brie?
And what is, right, what we've come to think is that word comes to us so easily because we've replaced...
Our sense of reality, we've replaced like concrete things with what's easy to abstract.
