There's a way in which a map just looks like here's the world, but every map is,

is a selection procedure, right?

What maps do, not as an accident, but as an intrinsic part of their function, is they leave out most of the world, right?

A map that includes every damn cell in the world is useless.

It's the world.

What maps do is highlight certain things and delete other things.

That highlighting is a choice, right?

It represents some interest and it deletes others.

Yes, exactly.

Dennis Woods, who wrote the book, The Power of Maps, has this moment that my students love, where he says like, why don't,

our maps show sound quality.

And he says that most of the maps we have represent two major interests.

They tell us where the property lines are and the political borders, and they tell us how to commute to places in cars.

That's what they're really good at.

And they don't tell us where the nice spots are that sound nice or feel nice and have rich ecosystems, right?

So I think it's really clear there to show that maps show an interest, right?

Based on prior decision about what

They've collected and what – so what information is collected and displayed and which is hidden.

And I think what I want to say is the same is true of metrics.

It's not that they're lying.
