As you get better at things that are valuable,
you get herded more and more into these very rigid paths.
Like you have more and more people encouraging you like, no, no, no, you're getting really good at this.
Like, let's keep moving.
Like you can become a partner, keep doing more work.
Exactly when you get good enough to get control is when you're going to have all the pressure in the world not to do anything different than the prescribed path.
So it's like this flip switches.
At first it's, I just need to focus on getting better.
And then at some point it switches and you say, I need to make sure that now I'm using
my leverage from being good in ways that really resonate with me.
The problem is a lot of young people skip the first part.
So like very early in their career, like I want to shape exactly what my job is like.
Like, why can't I work one day with my dog and not have to do anything hard?
You skip the first step where you've made yourself sort of indispensable and valuable to people who really need what you can do.
Well, you have to do that first step first.
Then you can start saying, what do I want my job to look like?
I think it's really important to realize that.
I think also people don't necessarily understand the degree to which it is impossible for employers to find good people.
Like if you're good, you're organized, you're on the ball, you don't drop things, you're building up skills that are valuable.
They're desperate to keep you.
