Just seeing your workload there, all sorts of good stuff comes from that because A, you realize I'm overloaded.
Let me stop taking new things on.
B, you start thinking like, I could take half of these things off here right now.
Let me tell them, stop doing this.
Tell this person, like, I need to get this list more reasonable.
And then the third thing that comes out of it is you can start saying, well, let me partition this list.
These are the things I'm working on this week.
These things can wait.
All of this good stuff happens
When you can just say, this is what I'm working on.
You can't slow down when you don't actually, you know, see the track ahead of you or you don't have your hands on the wheel.
So just write down and confront whether it's scary or not, everything you're actually working on and let that be the starting place of saying, okay, here's where I am.
Where do I want to go?
Slow productivity is in some sense, my answer to the question, how is it possible to produce stuff that I'm proud of and is valuable and meaningful without burning out and without having work take over all aspects of my life?
Like to me, I think that's the key question of this sort of post pandemic moment in knowledge work.
My readers and podcast listeners care about this.
I really care about this because my three boys are now all elementary school age and need basically every single dad minute possible.
And so this question is a really urgent one for me and a lot of people.
Slow productivity is my answer to it.
You work on fewer things at once.
