Like you can actually have a place where people are.
The expectation is if someone's not on there, we don't expect them to see your chat, but you might see who's over there.
Oh, there's people on there right now that are working on their email and kind of just chatting.
But if I'm doing something serious, I'm not on there.
So you can simulate that.
The other thing you can do is structure sociality.
Hey, we're all going to get together and talk at this point, at that point.
But when it comes to actual work collaboration, really try to minimize what I call unscheduled interruption.
So like messages that are going to arrive, but I don't know when.
But whenever they do arrive, I need to respond to relatively quickly.
That actually becomes the operation that you're trying to minimize.
Because if there's a lot of unscheduled messages in your collaborative operation, that means I have to keep checking these channels all the time because I never know when something's going to come in.
If I have to check these channels all the time, I'm going to see stuff all the time.
And now I've destroyed my brain.
So now I'm operating at 50% of my capacity.
My brain is going to tap out at one or two in the afternoon.
We have to think about what happens between our ears, that piece of machinery and how it really operates.
It's really important when trying to design how to make a really sustainable sort of creatively nourishing workplace.
One of the things I talk about in the new book is the way that artists and writers and other people who do incredibly difficult creative tasks, focus is their whole skill, their whole career is built on the skill.
A couple of things they do is rituals and locations.
