When you're not going well as the best player on your team, the highest paid player on your team, and you're expected to kind of do a lot of the heavy lifting and it's not going your way, your teammates, your front office, your coaches –
Your fan base expects you to be a true professional, and that means to do everything hyper-professional to act like it's a fluke that you're not doing what you need to do and that it's going to turn.
To show any sort of frustration or negative attention, whether it's effort down the line, whether it's just missing a pitch and showing everybody that you're frustrated, I do that with the superstars that I've played with and against.
Dustin Pedroia, I can vividly remember striking out against a not very good pitcher, and he was literally, as he was walking back at Fenway Park, he was like, this guy sucks.
There was no pouting, no mule-lipping, no letting everybody know.
He was one-track-minded, and he played the same way every single day, and you just couldn't tell if they were mentally, not checked out, but mentally drained or mentally challenged.
I can – he wears his heart on his sleeve, and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but any sign of weakness or any sign of doubt or any sign of trouble hitting the water, that always, for a $500 million player, is a bit of a scenario where you just – you'd love him to fake it until he makes it and learn how to fake it until he makes it.
And you know what?
If I'm going to be blunt, the best way you fake it until you make it
is play like your hair's on fire.
And you know what?
A lot of times, getting down the line, doing certain things, stop engaging with your friends, get hyper-focused.
People pay attention.
All eyes are on 27.
They're scrutinizing every move he makes, okay?
Give them nothing to talk about other than you're out there playing hard and you're trying to lead your team by effort.
You know, attitude reflects leadership, right?
