And to boot, managers consistently tell me that it's harder to promote camaraderie in the hybrid work environment that so many of us are in right now. matched

You just don't have as much face time. matched

So if they can find somebody who they believe is going to lift the collective mood in the office, maybe rub off in a positive way on their coworkers, that's somebody they're really attracted to. matched

I'm thinking of a conversation I had with a woman named Lauren Gomes Atwood, who is a project manager. matched

And she said, I worked with a personality hire recently. matched

This person was a lot of fun to be around, and it worked OK for a while. matched

And then this person got a promotion. matched

And then the rest of us were like, hmm, that doesn't seem right. matched

It seems like maybe that promotion was based on personality more than skill. matched

And so there's a point where the personality hire, maybe sometimes it's a short term fix. matched

But if people get the impression that that person is failing up, so to speak, that can all of a sudden breed resentment. matched
