That was a critical lesson for us 30 years ago in starting 1-800-GOT-JUNK was understanding that if something goes wrong, it's not a person's fault.
I had a mentor who was being groomed as the second in command at Starbucks.
And Howard Behar called my mentor, Greg, who was the second in command there.
And he said, Greg, why is the letter B on the sign at 50th and Wallingford in Seattle not working?
Imagine, they have 11,535 stores at the time.
Greg goes, I don't care.
Howard goes, what do you mean you don't care?
Why is the letter B not on?
He goes, Howard, that's the wrong question.
The question we need to ask is what system was broken or what system was missing or what system can we put in place to ensure that every letter on every sign at all of our locations are always working?
That's a question I'll look at.
Right?
It's a system.
It's going back to the core.
It's going back to first principles.
So every entrepreneur needs to ask not why did Bob fuck up?
Wait, why did you hire Bob?
How did you train Bob?
What system was broken that allowed Bob to make that mistake?
Bob didn't make a mistake.
