Cora, who is the mother of this family, and her younger daughter, Maya.

But of course, it's a family of four.

So they're there with as yet to be unnamed baby, who's sitting in his pram on the way to receive said name, hence the title of the book.

And then there's the presence of someone else too, which is the family's father,

a doctor, he's quite a respected member of the community, whose name is Gordon, which is of some significance in this context.

Well, she was in a moon boot, I think.

Absolutely.

So it kind of opens the scene with Cora and Maya, her daughter, pushing baby in his stroller.

And they're crossing the town commons, which we've already been told is something that Gordon disapproves of.

And in this particular context, he's saying it's because there's been a huge storm overnight.

And it sounds like there's been some flooding and a lot of damage to the ground.

And so he's kind of framing this as a dangerous environment that they're entering into.

But really, he's someone who's quite controlling, as we'll find out as the story goes on.

And so he sets these little ground rules for basically every aspect of Cora's life.

But from this prologue, we see Cora and Maya, and they're on their way to register the baby's name.

And that's kind of the point of divergence that we're presented with right from the get-go here.

In terms of style, this is a novel that isn't really verging into the paranormal too much because what we're presented in each of the three timelines is still really kind of literary realism, as it's told.

But where this gets really interesting is as we think about the kind of structure of this novel.

And so that's where the kind of weirdness and the seriality comes into it a little bit as well.

She suggests Bear, which I think is both my favourite character in the book, is the bear identity, and also just the most fantastic name.
