That's why rejection hurts as bad as it does, because the need for connection and belonging is evolutionary, stemming from a past where isolation meant increased vulnerability to danger.

Today, isolation is differently dangerous, but no less so.

For a dog with enough time spent alone, without anyone to trust, starving for kindness, a change happens.

and that aloneness becomes a personality.

You see this clearly at the park, the extroverts running around, kicking dust into the eyes of the introverted loners looking on from afar.

Of course, not all who are solitary are unhappy, but the fact is, once an animal's been socialized, it's tough to change it, whether they're happy that way or not.

People are no different.

That's my opinion anyway.
