Then you gave birth and then you spent the months after in that total all consuming immersion of early motherhood, the fourth trimester.
with the feeding and the settling and the soothing and the watching and
Barely sleeping, completely focused on this one tiny person who needed you for everything.
There's been no guidebook.
You've had to work it all out, because as we know, every baby is completely different.
And now, as society, you're expected to just go back to work, like there's just an off switch.
Like you can step out of all that and into a meeting room and feel completely fine about it.
And I'm sure just as some colleagues will joke about, well, how is your holiday?
It certainly is not a holiday.
And of course it doesn't feel fine.
Of course there's going to be an ache.
You haven't done anything wrong by feeling this, and please know that.
You've done everything right.
You've built an incredibly strong bond with your baby and now your whole system is adjusting to a new way of doing life.
There's a concept I love called matrescence.
And if you've listened to the Working Mama podcast for a while, I've done a number of episodes around this topic.
And I distinctly remember the first episode that I did with Louise East on this.
It was like a light bulb that went off uh when she explained what this is.
And I love the concept.
That's why I often talk about it.
