One study published in the journal Science found that when faced with sitting in a room with nothing to do, some participants would administer painful electric shocks to themselves, just to alleviate boredom.
There's even a correlation between boredom and a shorter lifespan.
And even boredom's so-called upside, that it could make you more creative, could be a problem too.

Then there's also the problem that when people do feel bored, that's often tangled up with other strong negative emotions too, like tiredness, anger, or frustration.

But despite its pitfalls, Professor Thomas Goetz believes we can all find ways to embrace boredom, and that we can encourage more positive experiences with it in our lives.
I wonder whether embracing even those bad types of boredom might be useful for people in terms of their happiness as a sort of palate cleanser.
