I think sometimes there's some skepticism around techniques like mindfulness and focusing on your breathing.
Uh it sounds like such an obvious thing.
And also when you're in the midst of a crisis, it feels like that's not enough to deal with the anxiety you're feeling now.
While some people assume services like Beyond Blue might use volunteers, Kelly and her colleagues are qualified counselors.
She's had 20 years experience in phone, online, and face-to-face counseling.
And most of these mental health services in Australia stick to techniques with strong clinical evidence behind them.
So how effective are these services?
How much of a difference can a phone call make?
The CEO of Beyond Blue is Georgie Harmon.
Beyond Blue was one of several organizations to benefit from the federal government's injection of $74 million of extra funding to support mental health services in Australia through the pandemic.
Georgie Harmon says their $10 million boost will go towards new targeted programs to help meet an unprecedented demand for their online and call services.
Earlier you mentioned that some people are contacting you because they have underlying mental health issues that have been exacerbated by this, but that others are first time callers.
I wonder what sort of split there might be between those two different groups right now.
Associate Professor Jill Newby is a clinical psychologist based at the Black Dog Institute, a mental health research organization looking to improve treatments and services in Australia.
I wonder whether there's any literature around how people react to confinement and and all this time indoors that we're now facing.
Dr.
Newby says these studies give us some clues about how people's mental health may have been impacted over the past few weeks, but that we don't have specific data on an extensive global crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Which is why several universities have begun large-scale projects to directly assess how Australians have been faring.
The Black Dog Institute has begun its own survey of 600 people initially, and it's currently searching for more participants.
So I wonder what's behind a lot of the feelings that we're having at the moment.
