So those are our five stages of the life cycle of a trend.
That is our classic bell curve, the diffusion of innovation framework, early adopters, the rise of a trend, peak, decline, and obsolescence.
Let's bring this back to authors and the trend loop trap and why trends fail writers.
You could probably see, you know, as I was kind of going through that framework, when exactly a trend could trap writers, where the opportunities are and where they are not.
The reason I want you to understand that is because writers get completely caught in this loop.
It kind of goes like this.
Writer gets a great idea.
They go online.
They walk into a bookstore.
They check out the current trends.
But the stage that you are seeing it in bookstore is peak, right?
Or even sometimes past peak, depending on how much you know about the book business, how much time you spend in bookstores and online.
Then you start to wonder, is something trendy enough?
You panic, you get demoralized.
Some people scrap the idea entirely and then they kind of want to start again.
Well, what's the next trend?
And then again, you're always behind the trend if you're always going looking for the trend.
Unless you're a professional trend forecaster, you will have no idea about where the book business trends are going.
Agents and editors, we spend our entire careers digging into this skill and dialing into it.
We don't expect writers to do it.
