Appearances
Contemporary business trends and predictions, they're working kind of six to 12 months in advance.
As you know, it takes a long time to write a book.
edit a book, produce a book, sell it into the stores, you know, all of that takes a really long time.
By the time a book comes out, the trend that's at its peak today could be, you know, really could be in decline later.
So you don't ever, that's why you don't want to write to the trend and why it can be hard to break into something that is peak because of that framework.
You know, one of the quotes that I always come back to, because a lot of people are always, they're going to hear this and they're going to think,
If it's so hard to break into something, then why would I write in that category?
Or, you know, if every trend is or if every genre is always going to peak at some point, what are we doing here?
But really, the answer to me is always the Ava DuVernay quote, when you're in your lane, there is no traffic.

And I always believe that there's going to be a way.
It is going to be more challenging when categories are in decline to kind of enter the market at that time.
But your goal, if you're listening to the show, is always going to be that you want to be the best of the best, right?
That's the reason we're in this.
We're not in this for mediocrity.
I know all of you really want to do really well in the book business.
That's why you're dialed into this show.
Okay, so let's kind of talk about the do's and don'ts of why we need trends.
So
You do not need trends if they're distracting you from creating the art that you actually want to make.
