You don't need trends if they are keeping you glued to the shifting social media algorithms.

You don't need trends if you're paying attention to industry level economic shifts that agents and publishers need to worry about and not you.

Your job is to be the writer.

But here's why you do need to understand trends to a certain extent.

As a storyteller, you need to understand the genre expectations so that your book can actually generate unit sales.

We want you to be aware of maybe format shifts or how audiobooks are performing.

That's why I give you guys these updates on our show so you know what's going on.

And we do want you to pay attention to some social and cultural trends, right?

Because it allows you to weave modern, fresh issues into your storytelling in a way that feels really relevant, maybe feels right from the headlines and feels urgent and of the moment.

It feels right for modern publishing.

There's also a massive marketing advantage here, right?

If you already have a book out or you finished a manuscript, something starts to trend in a certain cultural conversation, then you can align your PR and marketing campaigns with it to sell more copies, right?

It's really just about paying attention.

Jumping on a bandwagon when the stars align is how things become a quote unquote overnight success because we know in publishing nothing can possibly be an overnight success.

It's just not possible.

We can't predict these moments, but we can be savvy enough to react to them with thoughtful and creative marketing.

And that is where the magic happens.
