The system should act in the public interest, particularly when it comes to safety, and that's the number one consideration.
So it's time that we got serious about this.
These are of a scale that's pretty enormous when you talk about the whole country being impacted.
It brought down the rail network, it brought down the freight network, it brought down payment systems and all of these kinds of absolutely essential services that we rely on.
Outages, of course, are increasing in frequency in Australia.
They do happen.
I mean, of course, the technology is complex and it is a system that needs a lot of maintenance.
However, these particular outages that we're talking about in the last three major ones were not an issue about complexity of the system.
They were an issue about the systems themselves and the processes around those systems.
And that's what we need to fix.
Well, that's a really good question, Sasha, because these questions have been asked in the Senate when there was an inquiry held last week into the Telstra outages.
Now, we know that at Telstra there have been rising profits.
Now, with these kinds of increasing profits, we've seen job losses and we've also seen increased outages.
So the question is, what is the mix of those factors and has that been implicated in this particular outage?
Well, I think the Senate Inquiry will report on their findings.
Telstra is doing its own internal review and there's also an ACMA review.
The regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, is undertaking its own review.
I think it'll pretty much highlight that in this particular issue, there was an error of judgment.
And the error of judgment really related to Telstra's staff or contractors making the decision not to install software, even though they were
warned a number of times that it was important to have that software.
