That's such a good question because learning, like development, happens on a continuum.
And just because children start school at five, mostly, doesn't necessarily mean that they're developmentally ready for learning.

What does it look like?
At the moment, in fact, we talk about maybe...
a sort of two-decade change in what we've been noticing as educators ourselves and the skills and attributes that children are coming into school with and sometimes without.
And there has been, over the past two decades, a definite decline in certain areas, such as your oral language and vocabulary, fine motor, gross motor.
Listening as well, but also those social emotional competencies, you know, the self-help skills, you know, even wanting to come to school can be tricky for some children if they don't feel happy and safe coming to school.
So the social emotional competencies are really huge as well.
A lot of the learning that happens in the early years in school, it's almost like the tip of the iceberg.
When we think of like school and learning and readiness, you've got
Sure.
Alphabet, letters and signs, reading, writing, literacy, all the good things.
But beneath that iceberg sits all those foundation skills that, you know, children really need to have and be automatic.
You know, those things.
And we know you've spoken to Joe Connell recently about gross motor and core stability.
You know, for children, if children aren't able to sit still, then it's really tricky for them to sit still, hold a pen with the correct grip and listen to what the teacher is asking me to do.
It becomes, you know, really, really overwhelming for those little people.
Even emotional things like I'm missing my mum.
