You got Jeremy Grant and Danny Avdija and Drew Holliday, guys who were kind of accustomed to playing in that space.

And one of Thiago's main thrusts his first season was like, Hey guys, like, I understand that's the way you guys have played.

I get that you've had success with that individually, but we're going to try to play a different way here.

And I understand that that's maybe going to be uncomfortable for you sometimes, but I hope that you can come along with it.

And he got great buy-in from the team right off the bat.

And they were able to, I think, overperform because of the way they played, up to and including shooting a lot of three-pointers, despite the fact that they were the worst three-point shooting team in the league last season, percentage-wise.

So...

I think from an offensive standpoint, you have a guy who, again, wants to play that new style NBA ball, who is really going to, as a lot of former players do, really put a lot of trust in his players to go out there and make decisions on the court on their own.

He's not going to call plays every single time up and down.

He is an improving play caller.

I think at the beginning of the season, you know, some issues with, you know, kind of out of timeouts and even like inbounding the ball.

There was a two week stretch where they had the hardest time doing that.

And, you know, they were able to work through things and figure some stuff out.

And then defensively, that's really where I was probably the most impressed with Tiago this season, you know, in Portland.

You know, it's been an issue defensively, you know, going back to when Terry Stotts was the head coach, you know, a team that was usually, I think if they finished 20 in defensive efficiency, that would have been a good season for Portland.

Last year, a full court, 94 feet, pressing style of defense that particularly early on in the season, before they had injuries to guys like Blake Wesley, guys like Drew Holiday, you know, really worked well.

They were pressing and causing turnovers and forcing other teams to play fast.

and were really having a lot of success with that style of play.

And then they had the injuries, and they basically didn't have a point guard for two months of the season.

Then he obviously steps into that role with the confidence that Thiago, I think, helped give him.
