That's a really interesting question.
Yeah, all the time I was thinking an alternative and much less interesting title would be the significance of a mother's love and the absence of it and the presence of it and how that affects our two different characters.
You uh sort of alluded to this, I think, earlier, but that initially
You sort of thought that maybe real life Maggie's story could be told as biography, but you soon realize that that wouldn't work.
And I'm wondering why was that?
What did fiction offer you that the real life story couldn't?
And did you have to establish any
boundaries with real life Maggie about what she was happy to be fictionalized and what she was happy to have represented as true to her story.
There's a particular chapter which you say, which is chapter seven in the book, which mirrors the real life Maggie's experience.
And it's about conditions and events at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne, I believe.
And what was the convent?
Who lived there and what went on?
it is quite shocking.
What the real life Maggie must have gone through because the way the fictional Maggie depicts it, it sounds like the most
cold, unloving form of child slave labour.
Yeah.
I mean, I think the historical aspects of this book were probably the most surprising in a way because it wasn't an element that was part of the wakes, but it very much has to be in this story.
I mean, for starters, the book is set in the the now phase of it is actually set in two thousand and one.
