There have been calls to stop it altogether.
There was a change in the law in 2024 that asked that these character references, if they are being given in mitigation at the sentencing stage, that they are vouched for and that, if needed, the person who's given them should be
make themselves available for cross examination.
And I think that a lot of people, a lot of campaigners and advocates thought that with that change to the law, a situation like this would not arise.
So there is a sort of grey area still here over whether or not the identity of the people who give these affidavits are open to the public.
And in this case, via the courts, certainly we did not get Mr. Glennon's name.
So perhaps there is more room for improvement here, certainly.
And it will make anybody who is considering
Whether or not to give one of these references, think twice about why they're doing it and the consequences of what they're doing and what it means.
You can see from what Mr Glennon has said in his statement that this is something that he regrets and that he said he's made a mistake here and he shouldn't have done it.
I won't have anyone convince me that they can defend in that space.
