At one point, at one moment, that is typical perhaps of adolescent language.
Everything is very over-exaggerated.
Emotions are very hyper.
But it's also, it's very kind of stark and realistic because you can actually see that that's how she feels and you can feel that with her.
And again, yes, that's the extraordinary thing about this book is that you say about why didn't your mature self help this character, this young person.
Not buried.
I think also that...
awareness when the old woman sees the young girl at the concert and she thinks, well, it'll probably be all right.
And then she thinks, well, maybe it won't.
And she said, nothing I could say would take away her pain.
So that it's that acknowledgement in that moment that even though the older woman is older and supposedly wiser,
someone of that age, the younger self of the woman also wouldn't understand at that point.
But she does have a moment of, which I think is, she does have a moment of enlightenment because she is in such a depressed state after this upheaval that she does actually think about suicide.
And she happens to meet her teacher at the train station who talks about
how good she is at creative writing and how that she should pursue it or work harder at it.
And she talks about how she needs to capture that excitement and that bitterness.
That is life.
Which is a chance remark, but it also feeds into the novel, which is about creativity, isn't it?
About that, almost that becoming Arisa.
The girl's fleeting happiness when she has these moments with her friends, when she meets boy Finn or other boys, her memory is immediately destroyed when she gets back home because her mother is literally sniffing her and, have you smoked cigarettes?
