Republican Pete Ricketts said this week that the United States would not tolerate Taiwan's status being changed by force and argued that Trump should raise the Taiwan issue directly with Xi.

That is basically Congress warning Trump not to trade decades of Taiwan policy for concessions in some other areas.

Nonetheless, there could be some smaller

Agreements on Taiwan.

Things like military to military communication enhancements, a South China Sea hotline, which we have had before, that's been a thing in the past, but China largely ignored it.

Or perhaps there could be clearer procedures for what US and Chinese aircraft or ships should do when they come dangerously close to each other, as we've seen the Chinese make dangerous passes of American aircraft and American ships.

None of this obviously solves the Taiwan issue, but if agreed to, they could reduce the chance that an accident becomes a larger military confrontation.

And then finally, there is Iran.

Iran may now be moving much closer to the center of this summit, which is unfortunate because the United States and China have much more pertinent things to hash out than Trump's war of choice.

But here we are.

Trump and she discussed Iran during their May meeting.

The White House said both agreed Iran could not have nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open.

Now China's description is a little different.

They said it was just narrower, focusing on emphasizing the reopening of the strait, not who controls it.

But today, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragji in Beijing.

Wang called for Iran and the United States to show restraint, return to the interim peace agreement reached back in June, and resume serious negotiations.

He also called for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen because of its importance to global energy markets and supply chains to include ending the US blockade.

Iran said it remained willing to pursue diplomacy while defending what it considers its sovereign rights.

Now, due to Aragie's visit, Xi now comes to Washington next week with a very fresh diplomatic position on the war in Iran.

Now, this is also another topic that Bessent and He Le Fong are expected to discuss in their meeting this weekend, specifically China's financial relationship with Iran.
