Now before I close this out, I want to address one of the best arguments that is often given by defenders of this administration's plan here to be chaotic, because there really is only one.
And it goes like this predictability is what got us into this trouble.
When allies know exactly what America will do, they underinvest and free ride.
Because why pay for something that the United States covers anyway?
Predictability forces them to buy their own security.
A Europe that can defend itself without us isn't a failure of the alliance, it's the point, and it frees American power to concentrate on the Pacific where the real long term competition sits.
And the burden sharing numbers say it's supposedly working in Europe.
But here's where it falls apart.
In leadership.
The theory only holds if that freed up American power actually shows up in the Pacific, if it actually deters.
It's not right now.
