That's a trap with a punchline.
So those kind of things we will start to hopefully see less of and actually not at all.
And the biggest shift that's happened is subscription traps, which is probably the one we love to loathe in the suite of dark patterns that there are.
And what we found through our research a couple of years ago, three in four Australians have had difficulties trying to get out of a subscription they no longer need or want.
We also found that one in 10 have found it so difficult that they just continue for paying for something they don't use at all.
which is just extremely problematic, that this should be money that should be in your pocket, but it's just being paid to a platform or a service provider because it's too difficult to get out.
So if you don't like what you're getting, the service that you're getting, it should be really easy to get out.
A really clear cancellation button, really clear information also about what you're getting in the subscription and a really clear way to get out when you don't want it.
Another big shift that's happening is drip pricing and a ban on it.
So no longer will we be drip-fed what an actual price is as you go.
So there won't be like this base price and then all these other prices get put along the way.
A booking fee, a transaction fee, a convenience fee, a rush fee.
Don't they just?
yeah exactly or an electronic processing fee i'm like who's processing it the computer and why am i paying a fee sorry i've got my quarters i'll spike then i'm sorry we get riled up here at consumer policy research center as well so i i hear you i hear the pain and the good thing is that the government has heard this pain as well and yes and they're correct bringing it back to the topic and the
And they have basically banned this practice as well.
So from July 2027, we will hopefully see a big shift for consumers and see that navigating a market in Australia hopefully is going to be a lot easier, especially in online spaces.
So it actually does fit with the ACCC.
They will be the ones that will be keeping a watchful eye on the practices.
All of us will have a role to play.
And I think over the next year, if you see something, you're like, that's unfair, call it out, report it.
