So you're coming back.
I was on the way back to Coogee.
And when you do those paddles, I'm normally the most frightened when I'm out around the back of the cliffs.
And paddling into Coogee, of all beaches, you can paddle so close to the shore without there being waves to interrupt you.
And it's a really busy beach.
There's always lots of people in the water.
It's the part where I normally feel the safest.
I'm like, I'm around civilization again.
And so it was not where I expected it to be such a frightening event to happen.
So you come into Coogee, what happens?
I was probably 80 meters offshore just towards the south end and had just started going past a couple of swimmers.
And about 100 meters ahead of me, there was a group of three women and one of them started screaming shark.
I actually found out that she felt the shark before she saw it and said it felt like a wetsuit material and she thought it was a dolphin, looked around and saw that it was a shark and that was when she started screaming.
And initially...
You hear people scream shark every now and then, and most of the time it's not a shark.
Sometimes it'll be kids trying to scare their mates or just someone reacted too quickly to a dolphin.
But the length of time and the panic of this made me realize this wasn't a false alarm.
And the people around me,
I would have assumed just swam straight to the beach because we went that far from shore, but they became pretty frightened as well and just wanted to be out of the water as fast as they could.
And the nearest option for that was me.
