But the way that the Shark came in, there was a group of three of them.
The girl that initially saw the Shark and the other girl that wasn't Leah were friends, but they didn't know Leah.
It just happened to be nearby.
And the shark was kind of in the middle of that group.
So the person that was furthest out couldn't just swim straight over the shark to get back to shore.
And as I started paddling closer...
I could see it underwater.
It was a really clear water.
I couldn't see the details because I was still quite far away, but I could see the shadow of it going, this thing's a pretty solid animal.
But it looked like it was moving almost inquisitively.
It was really slow and cautious movements.
And in my experience with sharks, I just thought that would mean that it would figure out that they weren't seals and they weren't food and just swim off and leave them alone.
Is that what happens normally, is it?
I like to think that.
Whenever I've seen a shark and it's been moving pretty slowly, it's never really been a problem.
There's been times that I've been out surfing and it's just been such a nice day where the sharks are making themselves so seen and there was enough people in the water and they were small that
We saw there was two crews in the lineup and you could just kind of follow them the whole time and go, these things aren't interested in hunting us right now.
They're just swimming around in their own environment.
And I think that was a false sense of security.
I definitely haven't had enough exposure to sharks to know their behaviors inside and out.
