That was just the attitude I had that kind of got me paddling over towards them.

I thought that I was going to go over there.

The shark was going to realize they're not food.

I would get them on my board and there'd be a little bit of panic and everyone would get to the beach just fine.

And then when you got there, what happened?

Yeah.

When I was about halfway across, I started seeing Leah getting pushed around and see about 50 meters away at this point.

I couldn't, it's all happening underwater.

So you can't really see the exact details of what happened, but it started off pretty slow.

And I've been out in the water, spending a lot of time out in the water training for races like this or doing my training for Ironman or just surfing.

The ocean's my favorite place to be in the world.

And so spending that much time in the water, you spend a lot of time thinking about scenarios of sharks, what you do if there was an incident like this in the water.

And I kind of always thought if I was on a big board like this,

that I'd be able to paddle in and the size of my board would probably frighten the shark and scare it off.

And so I was paddling over with that kind of intention, still pretty scared, still pretty hesitant, because realistically all I wanted to do was paddle into the beach as well.

And I eventually saw the shark come out of the water.

I saw the dorsal fin, saw the back, saw the tail, and I saw the size of it.

It felt like I was looking up at the animal whilst being on top of a board and just went, this thing is not going to be scared of me.

And my entire attitude on the situation changed where I felt pretty helpless and just went, I don't know what I can do to help here.
