How far away were you at that point?
I want to say about 20 meters.
And what compelled you to keep going?
At that point, I didn't keep going, actually.
It wasn't a scenario where I paddled in and separated the shark from Leah.
I think that wouldn't have ended very well just after seeing the size of this animal.
I was too scared to do that.
I'm not afraid of admitting that, I guess.
So at that point when I felt pretty helpless, I started looking around for another person that was on the paddle with me.
His dad was on a jet ski and I thought the best option at this point would be a power crafter come in and scare this thing off, be able to grab Leah out of the water.
Yeah.
So there was a jet ski in your vicinity?
Yeah, but the people they were escorting were on smaller boards than me, so they were a bit slower, and they were too far away to be helped.
So my next option was just get the attention of the lifeguards.
And so I just started signaling to shore big code X to try and let them know that there was stuff going down in the water.
There is a signal, they say.
Yeah, I actually, upon reflection, am wondering whether I used the wrong signal because you're meant to chuck two arms up in the air to do the emergency alarm and evacuate.
The code X is kind of submerged, swim and missing, or just basically serious emergency.
I think it still worked with the intended effect.
But yeah, it felt like so long before the shark alarm was going off, before the beach really knew what was happening.
