I think that's where it gets uncomfortable and awkward when the word hero is thrown around because I do associate that with fear.

And when I say that I'm grateful for all the factors in my life that have led to me to staying in the water, that has been managing fear.

I've been scared of everything.

I was a very cautious kid, still am very cautious.

And so many of the things I love to do really scared me.

So when I was doing training in swimming in the ocean for my surf Ironman, I was scared of sharks.

So I only like to do it around other people.

I race in surf and not even big surf used to terrify me.

Small surf would scare me and I would see all my mates out there having fun and really, really want to be out there, but just be too scared.

And over many years, learning to manage that fear and

It's not about making it not scary anymore.

It's learning how to deal with that and weigh the risks.

And I knew that my skill wasn't the issue.

It was purely the fear.
