I think a good analogy for that is when you're surfing on a small day and you get held down by a wave and you try to fight it and come back up, those are sometimes the most scary experiences because when you try and fight it and then don't get back up for a breath straight away, suddenly you've used all your oxygen and then you go, okay, I've run out of breath, what am I going to do?
Whereas when you go out on the big days and you're prepared to face a long hold down and you just accept that you're going to get washed around and eventually you're going to pop back up,
you pop back up after 10, 15 seconds of getting held down and feel fine.
I think that's the same with your fears is when you learn to accept that they're just thoughts and the actual fear isn't going to hurt you.
It's actually there to protect you.
That's a really powerful method.
And,
It's also something I've used in my sport is that fear is really closely adjacent to excitement.
And so I'd be really scared for a race because there was a lot of pressure on it.
There was big surf.
And I learned through the years that when I finished those events, I used to be so angry at myself of going, that was so much fun.
I wish I could have appreciated it more in the moment.
And that was essentially the hard way through trial and error I learned that you can have not complete control over your thoughts, but you can negotiate with them to control your state of mind and time.
I want to be pretty transparent in the fact that
I'm not an expert.
I don't have a full understanding of both sides of the arguments.
But my perspective on it is that something does need to be done.
I think there's definitely been more shark attacks in Australia in the last year or two than there have been in my entire life.
And the beaches are such an important part of Australian culture.
They've provided me with such joy.
