I remain agnostic about whether that's entirely possible.
But the bigger threat may be that these machines can be highly capable.
They don't need to hate us.
They don't need to have the same evolved motivations like lust and violent tendencies and all the other things.
They can be unintended serious consequences with the capabilities of these devices that mean that they are a threat in all kinds of ways.

Well, I think Alan's made the point in the sense that we don't need consciousness in order to make deep inferences about human behaviour and make predictions that could potentially be threatening to us politically and in all kinds of other ways.
