It's been quoted in newspaper articles, magazines, internet forums, etc., etc.
It's done the rounds.
Yeah, well, it's been rubbish by Boeing themselves, who've actually issued a rebuttal saying they don't recognise the findings.
I asked exactly that of an actuary from the Institute of Actuaries.
Dave Grimshaw.
He works for a firm called Barnett Waddingham, and he started by explaining there are different reasons for retiring early.
And there's another statistical trap.
Some of the people who retire at 55 will die before they reach 65.
But I can guarantee that absolutely nobody who retires at 65 has died before they reached 65.
It just doesn't happen.
So for these two reasons, there is some evidence that people who retire earlier will, on average, die earlier.
But there's no reason to think that the retirement causes the death.
Every rider will have almost a fingerprint of the type of performances that they do.
We can plot the best power a rider can produce over one second, two second, five seconds, two, three, four hours, and you'll see a logarithmic decline in the power output.
If you take cumulative data over a period of time, you can build up a clear picture
of that rider's power profile for want of a better word and then if you compare an individual stage to that power profile you can start to see whether it was out of the ordinarily good or out of ordinarily poor and then it would be a case of analysing why those differences were there.
320 and 322 watts were the averages for the two earlier climbs.
It's around 4.8 watts per kilo, whereas on the final climb of the day, 360 watts, so about 10% higher at 5.29 watts per kilo for the final climb of the day, which is the sort of figure you would expect
from a rider like him having already done two controlled climbs to be able to pull out a bit more, but not a crazy amount more for the final climb.
Yes, I suppose we didn't have power data on so many riders, but we could hypothesise that they might be riding 320 for the first couple and suddenly 400 comes out of the bag.
