Well, for those listeners who like to look at the last page of murder mysteries, yes, it is a myth.
For anyone who wants to know why, the first thing to say is that the 18 months claim is related to a similar claim, which is that the earlier you retire, the longer you live.
I have a graph here that's been doing the rounds for a few decades, and I think this graph is typical of this kind of nonsense.
It purports to show that employees of Boeing who retire at 55 will have a life expectancy of 83, while those who leave at 65 will only live for another year and a half.
It's been quoted in newspaper articles, magazines, internet forums, etc., etc.
It's done the rounds.
Yeah, well, it's been rubbish by Boeing themselves, who've actually issued a rebuttal saying they don't recognise the findings.
I don't know where it came from or why someone circulated it, but Boeing say as far as they're concerned, it's made up.
But that hasn't stopped people from spreading it around.

They do.
They had a study of past employees that found that retiring early at 55 or 60 was not associated with better survival than retiring at 65.
In fact, they found that mortality was higher in employees who retired at 55 than in those who continued working.
I asked exactly that of an actuary from the Institute of Actuaries.
I spoke to Dave Grimshaw.
He works for a firm called Barnett Waddingham, and he started by explaining there are different reasons for retiring early.
So if some people are retiring because they're seriously ill, they're going to bring down the average life expectancy of those intending to have a long, fulfilling retirement.
Fair enough.
