And there's another statistical trap.
Some of the people who retire at 55 will die before they reach 65.
That's the way the cookie crumbles.
But I can guarantee that absolutely nobody who retires at 65 has died before they reached 65.
It just doesn't happen.
So for these two reasons, there is some evidence that people who retire earlier will, on average, die earlier.
But there's no reason to think that the retirement causes the death.
You simply can't conclude that early retirement will be bad for your health.
There does seem to be a difference, but perhaps not as drastic as you might think.
Certainly nothing like enough to cause all teachers to drop dead 18 months after retirement.
So basically, a lawyer who's retiring today shouldn't think their life expectancy is another 19 years.
They should be thinking it's actually going to be more than that.
Now it's not clear that the job classifications are really driving this effect.
It's more likely that certain jobs are done by people with a particular lifestyle, diet and socioeconomic background and all those factors will affect life expectancy.
