According to the Department of Health and the manufacturer, 1.4 million women have used Implanon since 1999 when it was first licensed.
In order to work out the failure rate, we need to convert that to women's years of use, say 1 million women years if those women used it for less than nine months.
Yeah, it's a three-year implant.
So if we take the 584 women who reported their unwanted pregnancies, the failure rate for Implanon is less than 0.06%, which is much lower than any of the reporting or even the manufacturer suggests.
So let's take the pill, for example.
According to the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, which is in the States, with perfect use of the pill, 0.3% of women have unexpected pregnancies in the first year.
