If you're not willing to help someone battling cancer, then you're a bad person.
The especially scammy ones will make you act fast and impulsively on the emotions you're feeling.
They'll make you feel bad for vetting.
So Iman, don't be hard on yourself.
because this is what they're built to do.
They don't want you to vet the information, obviously.
They'll just fabricate stories sometimes.
At first, it's just $1, then it's another, until you've given more than you can afford.
Talk about sunk costs.
Much like a cult, leaders of these kind of charities can be charismatic and encouraging, the cult of personality.
There's a big reliance on trust.
One example of charities getting scammed themselves is the foundation of New Era Philanthropy.
It was run by a Christian businessman named John Bennett who ran a massive Ponzi scheme that preyed on other charity organizations in the Philly area.
In the 1990s, he was able to
prey on charities like the Boy Scouts of America.
Shame, shame on you, John.
Nature Conservancy and a bunch of universities.
He told people he'd doubled their money through an anonymous donor, but really it was all a scam.
In total, he got more than 500 million, according to a government report.
