writers and Australian stories just become way more popular.

And I have a theory about this and you probably do too, because I know you're as experienced as I am.

But I think what happened is the traditional way we found out about books in the media, like through the gatekeepers of literary editors, and you know, we need all the book pages, so I'm not criticizing, but I think in the past, a long time ago, they were very much male authors, they were very m very much literary fiction, and they were real gatekeepers in terms of what we read and we what we didn't read.

And I think what social media has done, what podcasts has done, like yours,

is that they have made that connection between reader

and writer a closer relationship.

And I think born out of that has been Australian fiction.

I really do.

I feel that that was the moment, you know, when readers started to tell us directly what they wanted to read.

But you know, even recently, even recently somebody, it was a journalist said to me, Oh, you know, what's so attractive about commercial fiction or

you know, women's fiction or mass market fiction.

just like what a question is that?

Well one, commercial means that people are buying it.

And reading it.

And two mass markets, so and women's fiction, well we're ninety percent or something of the readers, you know, in this country.

So and there is that cultural I've been told and I'm sure you've had this experience many, many times people have said to me, Oh, Cheryl, you're too popular.

And so, uh, actually what, me personally or my business?

I had a guy at the Sydney Writers Festival, one of the directors a few years ago, saying we we really can't work with you 'cause you're just too popular.

People like to read the books that we talk about.

It's what we want.
