First off, they're looking at engagement surveys.
They're looking at levels of happiness within their organization.
And some HR chief and others are concerned about that.
They're also now trying to think about novel ways to address this.
Some companies, for example, like the consulting firm McKinsey, are increasing the internal mobility budget, making it easier for people to go to other offices, to take projects in different cities around the world.
The thinking there is that they want people to have a global mindset.
They want them to learn and develop.
Other companies are taking different approaches.
So the credit card issuer, Synchrony Financial, for example, is doing more job swaps.
So they're letting people apply for positions that sometimes are only 90 days.
They can go from 90 days up to a year or more where you might take an entirely different position in the organization and then return to your previous role.
But it's enough to get a taste of something new.
You refine your skills.
You learn about a new area, even if you end up going back to doing what you were doing before.
Employees really are embracing that.
I talked to somebody who did this at Synchrony, for example, and he worked in an operations function at the company.
He's been at the company for more than 10 years.
He had been in his current role for almost two years.
And he said that he decided to put his hand up for a job in engineering just because it would give him
little bit different taste of what goes on in the company he would sharpen his skills and he said he was just starting to look at kind of what else was out there at the company and this was a way to to get a feel for that what the HR chief at that company told me is that just the idea that there's an open position out there that the idea that you can move is really healthy not everybody wants to change but nobody wants to feel like they have no options they're trapped that can be really toxic how about people's bosses how do they feel about the job swapping
